Prince William and his wife have a combined net worth of $50 million, part of which is earmarked for raising their children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and their third child, Louis Arthur Charles, until they reach adulthood.

The estimated cost increases significantly for the royals, with estimates suggesting they could spend at least $1 million on Prince George alone. So the total cost for all three children could be around $3 million.

Here are some of the costs that may arise while raising these royal children:

Education: Tuition fees include $19,492 for Princess Charlotte's nursery, $240,767 for Prince George's eight years at Thomas's Battersea in London, and $55,772 annually if he attends Eton College like his father.

Nanny: Costs range from $36,493 to $58,552 for nanny Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo, with expectations that the figure could be higher.

Clothing: At least $200,000 per child, plus $514 for Prince George's uniform and accessories.

Childbirth costs: A minimum of $24,910 for the Lindo Wing birth, $2,109 for prenatal care, and $25,500 for consultations (these figures represent the total for all three royal children).

Childcare items: $75 for a christening gown for all three children, at least $480 for a baby carrier, a minimum of $4,000 for a stroller and accessories, and $6,000 for three separate rooms.

Specific costs associated with raising three royal children include: Princess Charlotte started preschool in January 2018 at the highly selective Willcocks Nursery School. Parents are required to pay a non-refundable registration fee of $167, payable upon the birth of the child. If accepted, there will be a $2,009 booking fee.

And that’s just the start. Tuition for five mornings a week each term is $4,086 ($12,258 for three terms).

Afternoon tuition (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) is $2,411 per term ($7,234 for three terms). Charlotte attends both mornings and afternoons, for a total of $19,492 per year. Willcocks Nursery also offers a special lunch club, which charges $777 per term for one lunch per week or $2,331 for three lunches per week. Prince George attended Westacre Montessori Nursery, which costs around $46 a day. In September 2017, Prince George, then four, started attending Thomas's Battersea, which costs $23,000 a year.

The fees will increase in year three when he turns eight. If Prince George stays at the school until year eight, at age 13, the total cost will be $240,767. Prince George's annual uniform costs $456. Additional accessories (gloves, hats, scarves and coats) cost an additional $58, for a total of about $514. When George turns 13, he will need to decide whether to attend Eton, like his father and uncle Harry. The current term fees there are $18,059, which equates to an annual fee of about $55,954.

That puts the total cost of educating Prince George alone at more than $500,000 — more than 32 times the average $15,667 spent per 4- to 6-year-old in London. Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo, the royal nanny, is a graduate of the prestigious Norland College, which trains childcare workers. Graduates can earn up to $58,552 a year in London, $84,343 outside London, and up to $145,665 abroad. Borrallo likely earned more while caring for the three royal children and accompanying them on trips and outings. The average London family spends $46,000 on clothing per child over a 20-year period. For three children, the total is $138,000. William and Kate’s family certainly spent more, as just one Gieves & Hawkes baby suit for Prince George cost $7,000. Based on such expenditures, it’s estimated that the couple could spend as much as $200,000 per child.

The Lindo Wing, where William and Kate’s three children were born, charges $8,900 for a 24-hour stay in a luxury room for natural births. However, they offer a 10% discount to mothers who give birth there. That brings the total cost of the births to $24,910 for all three births. This doesn’t include the $8,500 consultation fee for the royal obstetrician, which brings the total for all three children to $25,500. The average cost of decorating and furnishing a nursery is around $2,000, but that’s for the average family. William’s childhood wardrobe, for example, cost $2,880. Before Prince George was born, Kate bought a Wicker Moses basket ($297) along with several cribs (the cheapest cost $82). Given that the royal family frequently visits Kate’s parents in Bucklebury, the costs associated with personal security could be substantial; however, those costs have not been disclosed.
